Research @ MGSM
A-List Visiting Fellows Professor John Griffin & Professor Gene
Brown
During December, MGSM hosted two A-List
Visiting Fellows. Both Professor Gene Brown & Professor John
Griffin presented to our doctoral students, alumni and staff.
Professor John Griffin (Professor of Finance, McCombs School
of Business, University of Texas at Austin) gave two
presentations. In the first he addressed the question 'How did
Moody’s and S&P disagree on CDO fundamentals but agree on AAA
ratings?' In his evening presentation to Alumni and invited
guests Professor Griffin spoke on the topic 'Do hedge funds
create value for clients?'
Professor Gene Brown (University of Missouri, Kansas City) presented to a group of MGSM
doctoral students and staff and outlined his research on
Customer Relationship Management (CRM). He shared results from a
survey of marketing professionals regarding CRM and a method for
assessing CRM success.
Through the generous donations of alumni we were able to bring
you these events. Thank you again for your support!
Demystifying the Word of Mouth Phenomenon
MGSM Marketing Lecturer Dr Lars Groeger partnered with Australia’s leading
word-of-mouth (WOM) marketing company, Soup, to develop a
custom-built Facebook survey app that taps into Facebook data
and maps the flow of offline conversations to measure the reach
and value of branded conversations.
Dr Groeger said: “This new app allows us to differentiate
between frequency of conversations and actual reach. So far this
has not been possible. The implications are highly relevant for
any marketing manager who wants to accurately compare a WOM
campaign with other media channels in terms of reach, frequency
and ROI... While there has been a large amount of research into WOM and
viral marketing, our knowledge about how WOM actually spreads
from one person to another is limited and the topic remains a
mystery for many marketing managers. We are trying to de-mystify
the WOM phenomenon".
Detailed results about the structure of
friendship networks, its impact on reach and frequency of
conversations, as well as a new model to calculate overall reach
of a WOM campaign will be available soon. Contact Dr Lars
Groeger for additional information about the research.

FACULTY NEWS
During 2011 Professor Gayle Avery authored two new books
'Diagnosing
Leadership in Global Organisations: Theories, Tools & Cases',
and 'Sustainable Leadership: Honeybee and Locust Approaches'.
The first covers case studies on leadership from Australia, South
Africa, China, Germany, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, UK and
the USA.
Honeybees and Locusts is based on extensive research into
companies around the world. Professor Gayle Avery identifies 23
practices that drive sustainable leadership and makes the
research evidence for these practices accessible to practising
managers, helping them make the business case for more
sustainable and business-enhancing leadership practices.
Professor David Gallagher has written an article 'Governance
through trading: institutional swing trades and subsequent firm
performance' with two colleagues that will be published in
the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis during 2012.
A video featuring Dr Debbie Haski-Leventhal (Senior Lecturer of
Management) talking about her contribution to the first-ever
